Through a Dog's Eyes

Through a Dog's Eyes is a documentary about several different people receiving their service dogs. It premieres April 21st at 8pm on PBS.

Hero Dogs - Angel

The aptly named Angel is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of her 11-year old boy, Austin. The Golden Retriever raced to get between Austen and an attacking cougar in their backyard when Austin was out getting firewood. Angel fought the cougar for 20 minutes while her family watched helplessly and waited for the police to arrive. When help finally arrived, the cougar was shot and killed and Angel was miraculously discovered to be alive.

Angel was taken to the vet to be treated and is expected to make a full recovery.

MINE

A gripping, heart-wrenching story of hurricane Katrina victims and their struggles to find their dogs. The preview itself got me a little choked up, so I would recommend grabbing tissues if you're going to watch the full film, available on iTunes.

Faux-Fur Wearers Beware

So this post is a little late to the game, but apparently awhile ago several chain stores were found to be passing off real fur as imitation faux-fur. I'm not going to take sides on whether fur is right or wrong, but what concerns me is that the 'imitation' fur being used was found to be dog and cat fur.

Imported from China (where extremely inhumane methods of raising and killing fur-bearing animals have been documented) the furs were sent for DNA testing to determine whether claims that they were coyote and raccoon fur were true, or whether the fur of dogs was used. It is believed that raccoon-dog fur was used, a type of dog raised in China that has raccoon-like fur. Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory and Loehmann's were 3 of the chain stores found to be falsely advertising their 'faux-fur' collections. Whether you are a fur-wearer or not, just be careful of what you are buying

Hero Dogs - Blue

An Arizona toddler was found safe last week after spending a night lost in the woods near her home in Cordes Lakes.

Family and authorities searched the surrounding area for nearly 15 hours in temperatures that dropped into the 30s after the toddler was reported missing. Searchers spotted the 3-year old Victoria by helicopter the next morning. Next to her was one of the family dogs, a Queensland Heeler named Blue. When the rescue team landed Blue was reported to be very protective of Victoria, hesitant to let anyone near her. When the rescuers told her that they were going to bring her to her parents the child smiled and Blue relaxed and allowed them to load her into the helicopter. She was taken to the Children's Hospital to be treated for mild frostbite, but was otherwise deemed healthy. Blue is being hailed as a hero dog for staying with the toddler throughout the night, providing her with much needed warmth (the girl was found wearing little more than a t-shirt) and companionship.

"We have to give a lot of credit to Blue," Kim Rayfield, the girl's aunt said. "He stayed with her all night."

Dog Nutrition

With so many options out there it can be a daunting task to choose the right diet for your dog. Do you feed dry kibble? Canned food? Perhaps you go the raw foods way, or make your own homemade food?

It is known that processed dog food high in grains can cause hot spots and allergies in dogs. Proper nutrition is important throughout the life of your canine, but making sure growing puppies (especially large breed dogs) get the proper nutrients to support their growth is essential. Senior dogs too have special dietary needs to keep healthy their aging bodies.

So the question is, what do you prefer and why? What commercial foods are the 'best'? What brands have you had trouble with? If you have homemade recipes, post them! :)
